Scope of Therapy

Individual Counseling Limits
CAPS provides short-term individual counseling for currently enrolled students who have paid the student health fee. On average, students are seen for about six sessions, typically scheduled every other week.  When longer-term or more specialized care is needed, CAPS assists students in connecting with community providers or may recommend participation in one of our group therapy offerings. Students are eligible to join a therapy group each semester, provided the group aligns with their treatment goals.

Limitations

A referral to a community provider may be appropriate when a CAPS clinician determines that a student’s needs would be better met through a specialist or longer-term therapy. Examples of situations where this may occur include:

  • A longstanding or severe mental illness that requires longer-term or continuous treatment.
  • Issues that may require a student to be seen more than once every other week.
  • Issues that may require support or recurring treatment over the course of the student’s academic career.
  • Issues that require a type of treatment outside the practice scope of current CAPS therapists.
  • Students experiencing significant levels of distress requiring immediate inpatient or intensive outpatient care, and/or experiencing a severe disruption in their ability to function.
  • Court-mandated assessment and/or treatment.
  • Treatment requirements beyond CAPS’s scope of service.
  • Students already engaged in therapy with another provider.
  • History of multiple psychiatric hospitalizations.
